A broken spring is the most time-sensitive garage door repair there is. Most garage doors weigh in the region of 300 lbs, and the spring exists to offset that weight. When it breaks, the door becomes dead weight — impossible to lift, and usually with a car shut inside.

If you have tried to open the door manually and could not, that is the classic sign. We replace both torsion and extension springs, with high-cycle upgrades available, and we treat spring calls as same-day priority.

Springs are under enormous tension and are genuinely dangerous to work on without training. This is not a job to attempt yourself — call us and we will get someone out.

What's included

Service call + safety inspection is $55. Waived with any repair or installation.

How a spring repair call runs

1

Call and describe it

Tell us what the door is doing. We'll give you a rough idea over the phone at no charge, and in most cases get a technician out the same day.

2

On-site inspection

A certified technician works through a full checklist — door, track, springs, cables and opener — and shows you what they find. The service call and safety inspection is $55, waived if you go ahead with the work.

3

Fixed on the spot

The parts are already on the truck, so most repairs are finished during the same visit rather than booked in for a second trip.

Worth knowing

  • Torsion is the better designA torsion spring is mounted on a shaft above the door. It balances the door better, runs more smoothly, and if it breaks it stays on the shaft and vibrates rather than flying loose.
  • Extension springs still get servicedExtension springs are the older design, mounted along the horizontal tracks, and they can fly off when they break. Many one-piece doors still require them, and we repair and replace those too.
  • High cycle is an option, not a defaultHigh-cycle springs carry a 10-year warranty against three years on regular springs. Whether that is worth it depends on how long you plan to be in the house — the technician will lay out both.

A customer on this exact job

Craig was quick to reply late at night to my evening email asking about a quote to repair our broken spring. He arrived the next afternoon as scheduled. Craig explained what was wrong, how the doors work, etc. When he broke down the pricing, he gave us the best option as well as more cost effective ones. The work was done immediately and only took about 30 minutes. Craig was very pleasant, spoke well, and courteous. Thank you, Craig!!

Spring Repair questions

Why can't I open my garage door manually?

That is usually the sign of a broken spring. Most garage doors weigh about 300 lbs and the spring offsets that weight; with the spring broken you are lifting the full dead weight of the door. Springs are dangerous to replace and should only be handled by a certified specialist.

Is an extension spring or a torsion spring better?

Torsion. It is the modern design — it unwinds in a circular motion on a shaft above the door, and if it ever breaks it stays on the shaft and vibrates rather than flying off. Extension springs are the older design and can fly off when they break. Many one-piece doors still require an extension spring, and we service those as well.

How do I tell if my door is balanced?

Pull the release cord and open the door by hand. If it slams to the ground you have a real problem and should have a certified technician look at it before using the door again.

What warranty comes with the springs?

Regular springs carry a 3-year warranty and high-cycle springs a 10-year warranty. A complete overhaul is covered for life.

Can I just buy a spring and fit it myself?

We will sell parts to homeowners and contractors who know what they need, but springs are the one part we push back on. They are under high tension and people lose fingers. We would much rather fit it for you.
